Bangladesh Social Development Academy (BSDA) is a non profit, non-government social development organization established in 1996 by Mr. Abdus Salam, some enthusiastic youth, teachers and social workers. In 1993 a rural library was established at Mohishkota village under Sadar Upazila to gather essential information, books and periodicals and to share knowledge among the educated youths and different classes of peoples. In 1996 these committed social workers made a plan to turn the library as development organization and established the Bangladesh Social Development Academy (BSDA).

During the last 14 years, BSDA has been trying to concentrate the importance in quantity and quality activities output with the supports of beneficiaries and extending all its efforts to obtain the specific objectives partly or as a whole, which positively address the vision, mission and objectives of the organization. BSDA believe that the human beings are the maker of their own fortune. So BSDA has been given emphasized to make the community people aware, active, creative and responsible for their own benefit as well as trying its best to widen the way to avail self-dependant, living standard that is free from all kinds of exploitation, pollution and poverty and by keeping peace and harmony with high level of mankind.                                                                                 

BSDA is practicing and enjoying democratic values, cost-effective culture and friendly behavior among the program personnel maintaining participatory decision making process, bottom-up and need-based research and bottom up planning in each and every activity implementation. Practices of different rules, guidelines, manuals and policies have ensured the responsibility, accountability and transparency as well as giving stress to enrich its personnel competency and to conceptualize the programs in accordance with its vision and mission.

BSDA has been trying to work in the major field of education, training, research, health, nutrition, environment, human rights and micro-credit. The growth and expansion of the organization might be explained into three phases:

1st & 2nd PHASE (1996 to 2008):

In IDP, it include literacy program, computer training for the educated youths and different professionals. BSDA started consciousness raising activities on different social issues like use of safe drinking water and sanitation, forestry, environment development, adolescent education, human and child rights, gender development, poultry and livestock development, establishment of nursery, homestead gardening, birth registration, child schooling, gender equality, early marriage, divorce, dowry, women torture, child and women trafficking, public health and sanitation, HIV/AIDs prevention, primary health care, legal aid support. BSDA started good governance and policy advocacy activities under Pilot project

BSDA started the activities of micro-credit for savings accumulation and micro-credit supports towards financial security of the poor and under taking income generation projects. Under micro-credit activities, it started Micro-Enterprise Development Assistance Project (MEDAP), Micro-credit expanded to general loan and seasonal loan.

It introduced Post literacy and Continuing education program under Ministry of Primary and Mass Education and NFPE, a project of BRAC-ESP and Housing project, a project of Bangladesh Bank. Within these phases, BSDA expanded its working areas in Sadar, Birol, Birganj, Chirirbandar, Fulbari and Parbatipur Upazila under Dinajpur District.

 

3rd PHASE:

During this 3rd phase most of the 1st & 2nd phase project activities were kept functioning and in addition of these, Human Resource related Education Program and Training Program combined to Education and Training Program, IGA component expanded to IGA Training (IT), HR training expanded to HR and capacity building training, Health, Nutrition, Homestead Gardening, Nursery Development component consist of Health, Nutrition and Homestead Gardening Project (HNHGP).  

 

During this phase BSDA started Food security and Agriculture development project, Access to disable rights project, National budget, Information rights and Citizen monitoring issues under Pilot Project (PP) activities. During this phase BSDA made a bilateral agreement with the LAMB Hospital, Parbatipur. According to this agreement BSDA took over the LAMB credit program. BSDA started to work in those new areas that gained from LAMB as new operational areas of BSDA. Those new areas are Ramnathpur, Bisnupur, Lohanipara and Damodorpur union of Badarganj Upazila under Rangpur District.

 

It has been observed that general people are becoming more interested to know about the national budget, information rights and willingness to involve in citizen monitoring process. So to fulfill all these needs, BSDA has started some awareness training on Good Governance and Policy Advocacy under its Pilot Project and from the later part of this phase this activities are being implementing under the Social development Program.

 

According the strategic plan of 2012-2017 BSDA has closed some of its projects (Women and Children development project, HIV/AIDS project, Good Governance and Policy Advocacy Project and Integrated Project-1 in Auliapukur 1-2).  On the other hand three new projects are going to start during the 2012-2013 fiscal year namely (Disabled Rehabilitation and Rights Awareness Project, Adibasi Development Project (Micro Finance and Awareness) Integrated Project-2 in Auliapukur 1-3). The Disaster Risk Reduction Awareness Project will be renamed as Disaster, Environment and Climate Change Issue Awareness Project from the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Under the Environmental Pilot Project the Ghagra canal study project is completed and the draft report has been prepared.

 

One remarkable achievement of BSDA during 2012 period is the preparation of the BSDA Strategic Plan 2012-2017, completion of some project evaluation and development of the Integrated Approach and Strategies for the BSDA Pilot Project-2 (Auliapukur ward # 1/3). The project evaluation activities were as follows:

 

 

  1. Evaluation report on Public Health and Sanitation Development Project-1 at Auliapukur Union 1-2 in Chirirbandar Upazila under Dinajpur District.
  2. Evaluation report on Awareness on Protecting Women and Children Rights Project at Uthrail, Shankarpur and Askarpur union under Dinajpur Sadar Upazila
  3. HIV/AIDS Awareness Project at Uthrail, Askarpur and Komolpur Union under Dinajpur Sadar Upazila
  4. PLCEHD-1 Project Documentation and Evaluation
  5. Evaluation of Non-Formal Primary Education Project (NFPE)
  6. Evaluation Report of Good Governance and Policy Advocacy Project
  7. Evaluation of NGO and Civil Society Networking Project

 

Another important event was the preparation of a research documentation regarding BSDA experience from 1996 to 2011.
